Historian and demographer, graduate of École polytechnique, Paris, University professor at the, École des Hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS, post-graduate university in Paris), emeritus research director at the national institute of demography (INED), chair “territoires et populations” at the world college of FMSH, fellow of Churchill College (Cambridge). Former editor in chief of Population, former director of the historical demography laboratory (CNRS). Author of about fifty books in the fields of population history, cartography, human and political geography.
