Joost Swarte (1947, The Netherlands) is a Dutch comic strip artist, graphic designer, illustrator, stained glass windows artist and architect. His foreign debut was in Charlie Mensuel in 1974. He was one of the contributors of the innovative Raw Magazine (1989-1991, USA), and he works as an illustrator for The New Yorker on a regular basis. A compilation of his comics was published asTotal Swarte at Denoël Graphic, Paris 2011. He designed the theatre Toneelschuur in his hometown Haarlem. Joost is the founder of the major Dutch comic festival Stripdagen Haarlem (2002) and Scratches Magazine. He designed numerous stamps, and recently a documentary children's book about the art movement De Stijl.
